With advancement in technologies the life expectancy of human has increased, but who wants to look at their age?

Today, science is proving that the food we eat affects our body both inside and outside. A sufficiently consumed healthy diet can help reduce the suffering from ailments such as arthritis, failing eyesight, heart diseases, fatigue and reduction in the skin sheen.

Most of the visible effects of ageing like wrinkles and invisible effects like the deterioration of heart functioning and eyes are caused by free radicles (highly reactive molecules that cause the damage to cell walls and to the genetic material within cells). Growing old healthily is like an art that anyone can master easily with a little knowledge about the foods.

Let’s have a look at the list of fruits and vegetable that help you stay fit and make you look younger always.

Banana

100 gram of banana contains 10% of potassium, which helps to control the high blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease. The presence of sodium in banana helps to maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance within the body. It also maintains the nerve and muscle functions.

Strawberry

They are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is required for the formation of collagen (a protein required for the maintenance of skin structure) and for healing wounds. It also helps in curing the gum disease that affects three out of four adults.

Pineapple

The presence of bromelain (a mixture of enzymes found in pineapples that digest protein) makes pineapple fall on the list. Studies have revealed the benefit of bromelain in curing joint problems. Pineapple also prevents premature ageing, as it is rich in Vitamin C which boosts the immune system and also forms a defence against free radicals.

Avocado

Avocado are rich in vitamin E and C. They are excellent for keeping your skin healthy, soft and supple. Avocado also helps to improve your hair growth and making your locks lustrous. They contain lutein (antioxidant) which protects against CV diseases and eye problems. Omega-3 present in avocado may help prevent wrinkles, enhance brain power and assist with arthritis pain.

Beetroot

The pigment Betacaine (responsible for giving distinctive deep red colour) is a powerful antioxidant. This antioxidant purifies the blood and shows anti-carcinogenic properties. According to studies, beetroot boosts immunity. It has the ability to enhance the body’s natural defence in the liver. Beetroot also has silica which helps in maintaining skin cells, tendons, hairs, ligaments, finger nails, bones.

Tomato

The pigment lycopene present in tomato neutralises the free radicals before they get damaged, therefore it helps to prevent everything from skin wrinkles to a heart attack.  Studies have shown that lycopene has twice the anti-carcinogenic properties than beta- carotene. The presence of iron in tomato helps in preventing anaemia and fatigue.

Mushroom

The protein content in mushrooms are much higher than most vegetables. Vitamin E and selenium are also present which helps to maintain hair and skin healthily. Mushrooms help protect against heart disease.

Various varieties of mushrooms has specific health benefits like

  • Shiitake mushrooms boost immunity.
  • Maitake variety of mushrooms treats liver disease and fluctuating blood pressure.

Carrot

Carrots help to keep your skin glowing. The βeta-carotene present in carrots is converted into vitamin A in the body, which is important for your eye health. Carrots are also beneficial for the immune and digestive systems. The high content of fibre and water in the carrots helps in cleansing the human liver, boost detoxification.

Peanut

Peanuts are also called as “Almond for poor” provide the most protein of all nuts. They are very good source of monounsaturated fats. This monounsaturated fat reduces the cholesterol levels and protects against heart disease and clogging of arteries. Peanuts are also high in vitamin E, which maintains wrinkle-free skin and glossy hair. The low glycaemic index score of peanuts also helps in preventing adult-onset diabetes.
